Artists Statement - The View from the Shore January 6 2011 Whenever I do an artists’ statement I seem to rehash the definitions and purposes of art. This is not so much an act of arrogance as it is an indication of continually trying to analyze what I am doing and why I am doing it. This is in order to make my work relevant. The only certainty I have about life and art is that they are dynamic and vibrant. Truth is not static and iconic as it is in Kitsch art. Kitsch tends to make a statement that does not consider or allow counter statement or change. In this case if there is stress in a piece the solution is self contained and self-evident. My art is about the truth’s that make us human. It is much the same as when I listen to a piece of music and can say that what the song is about is real to me. I have lived it also because I have heard what the artist heard. I love having company on the road…when someone looks at one of my sculptures and says, “I have been there too!” The show is called “The View from the Shore”. This takes its inspiration from the idea that the sea is a metaphor for spirit and possibility. On that line - artist’s love diving boards and sometimes provide boats.
